The Carbon Monoxide Safety Foundation Information

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas, which can poison and even kill people. CO is produced due to the incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels like gasoline, oil and wood, and the incomplete combustion of many natural and synthetic products. When carbon monoxide gets into the body, it combines with the chemicals in the blood and prevents the blood from bringing oxygen to the brain, tissues and organs, causing weakness, sickness and death. CO kills well over 1,000 people each year, but with your help, we can prevent these deaths.

Symptoms of CO poisoning are:
• Headache or dizziness
• Nausea
• Irregular heartbeat
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Loss of hearing or vision
• Extreme confusion
• Respiratory failure
• Seizures
• Loss of consciousness
• Cardiac arrest (heart attack)

To help prevent carbon monoxide from entering your home, the following procedures should be followed: At least once a year, have all fuel-burning appliances and your chimney inspected for proper working order by a trained professional. If these appliances are not working properly, carbon monoxide could enter your home, endangering you and your family. Don't idle your car in your garage because toxic fumes can build up quickly. Never use a gas oven to heat your home for any period of time. Never use a charcoal grill anywhere indoors. Never sleep in a room with an unvented space heater. Don't use any appliances, which run on gasoline, indoors.

If symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are observed:

Exit the building IMMEDIATELY and breath fresh air
Call 911 and tell them about your situation
Go to the emergency room AS FAST AS POSSIBLE
Tell the employees that symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are present

The Carbon Monoxide Safety Foundation (CMSF) is a non-profit organization. Our mission statement is to educate the public about the dangers of carbon monoxide and to raise money to purchase carbon monoxide alarms for those who cannot afford them.
